Outline (in English)
The aim of this course is to help students to prepare for their Study Abroad (SA) studies at the University of Nevada (Reno) and the Monash University (Australia).

Intercultural Communication and adjusting to life in a foreign country

Students gain self-confidence using English as a means of communication and learning while studying useful intercultural and interpersonal skills that are essential for a successful academic life in a foreign country.

Students participate in a variety of activities emphasizing all four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These activities include pair and group work and class presentations. The class is highly interactive, and the overall class atmosphere is somewhat informal. The students are expected to speak only in English throughout the course.
Course feedback will be provided in person through returned papers and exam results. However,in light of the recent pandemic feedback may be provided online as well using Google Classroom or another platform.
NOTE: For the month of April classes will be conducted ONLINE using ZOOM.
After the Golden Week Holiday, we will change to an in-person, face-to-face classroom format. Instructions will be provided for those students who need to continue to take classes online from May.

2:Intercultural vs International: What's the difference?
Lecture. Pair work and Discussion: cultural differences. Essay #1 due.
3:Cultural Factors and Values, Definitions of Culture
Lecture, Readings, questionnaire and discussion.
4:Multicultural Japan--How culturally diverse are you?
Readings and discussion.
5:Culture Shock and Cross & cross cultural adjustment
Lecture, Discussion, Practice and perform Dialogues,
6:Cultural Categories--Vs the personal and the universal.
Readings and discussion of the culture. Review for mid-term quiz.
7:Stereotypes vs Generalizations &
Cultural Values
Midterm quiz. Readings and discussion.

8:Talking about Culture:
Investigating culture; The DIE Method

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students are expected to come prepared to class each week by doing the readings and homework in advance, looking up unfamiliar vocabulary, writing the assigned essays, etc.Approximately 1-2 hours of homework will be required each week.
Late work is not accepted unless there is a good reason (illness, emergency).

Audio-visual equipment will be used during lecture sessions and for presentations.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Students will be assessed on:
Class participation (20%),
Homework, presentations, tests (quizzes), writing assignments, etc.(80%).
Any student who misses more than three classes without a reasonable excuse will not receive credit for this class.
Arriving late for class twice results in one absence mark.
If the student is absent,homework (including essays) must be turned in to the instructor and exams must be made up before the next class.
The instructor must receive a message by e-mail, a written note, or in person no later than the following week in case of absence.

A number simulations and roleplays are added to the curriculum to give students practice dealing with real situations and problem-solving related to the study abroad setting.

Students should have a good English-Japanese dictionary in paper or digital format.
Students should bring a notebook or loose sheets of paper. A binder or folder is recommended for keeping handouts and assignments.

Important note on taking this course:
This course is designed for students in the Faculty of Business Administration who will participate in the SA program in 2021, other students may enroll in the course on a limited basis with the permission of the instructor.
Note: Students' oral communication ability will be assessed both before and after the study abroad.
