Outline (in English)

Capital punishment is a controversial topic in Japan and in many parts of the world today. There are currently 106 countries that do not impose the death penalty by law. The vast majority of countries in Europe have abolished the death penalty, while 56 countries including Japan, China, the United States retain it.

We will learn about the death penalty from various points of view. Issues include the possibility of the execution of innocent persons, how the United States Supreme Court decides the constitutionality of death penalty in a State, the standard of imposing death penalty at trial in Japan, etc.
