Outline and objectives

This is an upper-level Intensive English course.

Goal

This course aims to help students take their English skills to a higher level by focusing on a range of topical global political issues. In the early stages of the course, students will analyse a specific topic under close supervision As the course proceeds, depth and breadth of study will be expanded so as to require students to carry out individualized assignments, which will further refine their organizational,analytical and communication skills.

A selection of topical global issues will be studied and a range of language-learning techniques and learner strategies and ideas introduced. All four of the main language skills, reading, writing, speaking and listening, will be employed. Together with lecture-style presentations from the instructor, students will be expected to undertake individual, pair and group-centred activities and to make short presentation based on their research. They will be expected to actively participate in all class activities in order to foster an academically challenging environment.

As such, this syllabus is flexible and changes may occur.It is your responsibility to check for updates and announcements both (i) on the course page within Hoppii, and (ii) in emails sent to your registered email address.
If classes are conducted online, Zoom will be the main platform used. Students will need a device that is connected to the internet and familiarity with Zoom protocol.

Feedback for homework and other assignments will be provided via Zoom, email or during class, if the lessons are face-to-face.

Students are expected to fulfill all homework assignments in a timely manner and prepare thoroughly for all in-class assignments.

This syllabus is flexible and subject to change. The choice of topics to be studied may change in line with the news stories current at the time and the particular interests of the students. Grading criteria

The final grade will be based upon a combination of attendance, active participation in class activities, homework and test scores:
40% Active class participation and homework.
60% In-class tests, quizzes and presentations.

Students are expected to play an active role in all aspects of this class in order to foster and maintain an academically challenging environment throughout the course.
