Outline and objectives

The course will develop the participants' English writing, listening, vocabulary and discussion skills through consideration of various issues related to current affairs.

Goal

This course will focus on the essay-writing process from the initial stages of gathering information and note-taking, to the organisation of an essay, and the final stage of proof-reading for content and accuracy. The course will give students practice in these skills, and will require the students to apply the skills in order to produce a problem-solution paragraph and multi-paragraph discussion essay.

Important: This course will be conducted online. You will need access to a computer connected to the internet. We will use Zoom and Google Classroom for the classes.


The course will be based around classroom listening, discussion and writing tasks which will involve students working in groups and pairs. Reading and writing tasks will mainly be carried out outside the class. There will also be some work on vocabulary building. The classroom language will be English, and students will be required to actively participate in classroom and homework tasks.

Feedback on homework tasks will be provided via Google Classroom and Gmail using rubrics along with personalized comments. For the final essay, personalized feedback will be provided on the two drafts using the comments feature of Google Docs.

Grading criteria

There is no final examination for this course.
Grades will be calculated in the following way:
15% class participation
15% quiz 1
15% problem-solution paragraph
15% quiz 2
40% discussion essay
