Outline and objectives

This course will help students to learn the art of gathering, organising, evaluating, and presenting ideas in a systematic method for either general, formal, or academic audience.

Goal

Students in this course will learn and practice writing as a tool to help them express opinions in variety of topics, environments, and settings. Although the primary focus of this course is beyond English language grammar, students will also be expected to demonstrate grammatical accuracy in their work. By the end of the course, students are expected to have gained skills relating to clarity of thought, confidence, and excellence in presenting their original ideas.

Important: This course may be conducted online. In this case, you will need access to a computer connected to the internet and Zoom connection.

The course will be based around classroom listening, discussion, and writing tasks. Reading and writing tasks will mainly be carried out outside the class. The assignments will be given in specified days requiring students to show comprehension of class contents. All written assignments will be returned in time with written feedback. Students are requested to freely engage the instructor for clarifications and questions. The classroom language will be English, and students will be required to actively participate in classroom and homework tasks.

Information about the course, finding about the other class members, and the instructor.

2:Course orientation and introduction 2

General and basic rules of writing grammar; a) Parts of speech, b) capitalisation and punctuation, c) subject verb agreement, d) paragraph rules.

3:Pre-writing research

How to prepare, read, and research for writing. collecting materials.

4:Topics and thesis

Selecting an argument, supporting opinions, paragraph structure, and writing a paragraph.

5:Anatomy of an essay

Introduction, outline, body, and conclusion. How to choose and craft topic sentences.

6:Types of writing
a) anecdotal story

Learn how make paragraph and begin using writing styles.
Assignment 1

7:Types of writing
b) descriptive writing

Sensory description, place description, and describing a person.
Learn to use similes and metaphors, simple and compound sentences,identify fragments and run-on sentences.

c) expository writing

Learn to construct and use thesis statement, supporting statements, simple and complex sentences, and write a conclusion.

d) Opinion and persuasive essay

Learn essay formatting, persuasive techniques, and developing supporting details.

Learn formatting and outlining, and developing supporting details.

Learn structures and terms, citation, and formatting.

Students will be required to use the Internet to research topics in preparation for the classroom sessions. Writing tasks will also be set for homework.

Textbooks

There is no set textbook for this course, but students are required to bring an A4 folder to organise their notes.
