授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives

到達目標Goal
Our goal will be to deal with eleven short articles on a variety of scientific subjects that should interest students. The development of vocabulary related to these topics is essential to read with greater speed and will be a high priority. Reading in phrases and clauses instead of word by word will be stressed. In addition, students will be expected to demonstrate a good degree of comprehension both of the reading materials in the textbook and the visual aids that accompany and clarify them.

学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
The in-class tests were a bit too challenging two years ago. I adjusted the format and length of them this year. If the class is again taught online via Zoom the final exam will become a final project that students will do outside of class and be due a few days after the last class meeting on line.

その他の重要事項Others
Class participation means volunteering, contributing to pair/group work. Students should attend every class if possible. The homework and official dates for the two quizzes and final exam will be announced in class, multiple times for the final exam. Students who miss five class sessions or more without approved excuses are likely to fail. Students who miss a quiz should inform the instructor of the reason why and then it will be rescheduled for that student. Students who miss the final exam (final project) should contact the office with reasons for their absence. Students with acceptable excuses (illness, death or serious illness in the family, for example) will be able to discuss the situation and reach an agreement about the exam or project with the instructor.
