授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
英語で表現するためには、必要な単語や表現方法を知っていることが必要であることは誰もが認識しています。しかし、完全に知識を蓄積してから表現を試みようとすると、その時期は来ないという可能性も考えなければなりません。高校で習得した知識と技能を基にして、さらなる学習は継続しながらも、獲得している力で表現を試みることがこの授業のテーマとなります。前期はリスニングに、後期はプレゼンテーションに着目します。See below.

The goal is for students to improve at speaking, listening, and presentation skills. Students will be graded on the content of their speeches as well as the delivery and visual aids.

Students will learn in pairs and groups. Peer assessment will help students get better at making speeches. Students will write their speeches and will give them in their groups. Lectures will be kept to a minimum. Pair and group practice will be the focus. Students will use the DVD to learn about gestures and pronunciation. In every unit students will watch a sample speech on the unit topic. Students can get feedback in class.

第1回:Orientation, begin first unit, give self-introductions
Course overview. Students will introduce themselves in pairs and in groups
第2回:Unit 1, continued. Self-introductions and peer assessment
Self-introductions, continued. Students will give speeches and they will assess each other
第3回:Unit 2 - Hometowns, overview. Students will give speeches and will learn about the overview in speeches.
Hometowns, eye contact. Students will write and give speeches about their hometown. Peer assessment will be about eye contact.
第4回:Unit 3 = Family. Students will write about their family, give speeches and learn about gestures
Family, gestures. Students will write about their family for a speech and they will learn about gestures.
第5回:Unit 4 - Interests. Students will give speeches about their interests and will learn about stage position.
Interests - Students will give and assess speeches and will learn about the conclusion in a speech.
第6回:Review - preparation for the first speech
Students will practice their speeches in groups, they will write, make their visual aids and assess other students in pairs and in groups
第7回:First speech - Students will give speeches for a grade
Students will give their speeches for a grade, and will assess at least one student each
第8回:Unit 5 - Students will give speeches about education and will learn about projection
Education, pronunciation. Students will give speeches about education and will learn about projecting their voice.
第9回:Unit 6 Students will give speeches about culture and learn about enunciation
Culture shock, enunciation. Students will give speeches about education and learn about the importance of eni¥unciation
第10回:Unit 7 - Students will learn about stereotypes, as well as about intonation.
Stereotypes, pronunciation. students will make speeches about stereotypes and will learn about intonation and stress in sentences
第11回:Unit 8 - Students will give speeches about population and learn about phrasing
Population, phrasing. Students will give speeches about population and will learn about phrasing in listening exerrcises
第12回:Review - preparation for the second speech for a grade
Students will practice their speeches in groups. They will also spend time writing them. Then they will assess othet students.
第13回:Second speech for a grade
Students will give their speeches for a grade. They will assess one other student.
第14回:Feedback - Unit 9 - We will review the course and go over unit 9
Students will give written feedback to other students about their speeches.
第15回:Orientation, begin unit 1. Students will introduce themselves
Course overview. Start unit 1 and students will do a pre-assessment of their abilities.
第16回:Unit 1 - Students will introduce themselves, and will write speeches. Pronunciation and eye contact will be mentioned
Continue unit 1. Self-introductions. Students will learn sentence stress and will practice close listening with a partner
第17回:Unit 2 Students will give speeches about an important person
Important person or thing. Students will make speeches on the topic and will learn about facial and hand gestures
第18回:Unit 3 - Places - students will give speeches on this topic
Talking about interesting places. Students give a speech and learn about gestures, slides, and graphs.
第19回:Unit 4- Opinions in speeches
Sharing opinions. Students give speeches about an opinion, and will learn about gestures with emphasis
第20回:Review for the first graded speech
Students will practice for their speeches and will give feedback to other students.
第21回:Speech test for a grade
Students will give and listen to all of the speeches.
第22回:Unit 5 - Biography
Talking about people. Students will give a speech about an important person and will learn more about hand gestures
第23回:Unit 6 - Stories
Talking about past experiences. Students will tell a story in their speeches and will learn about stress in sentences as well as more about gestures.
第24回:Unit 7 - Solving Problems
Expressing opinions about various issues.
Students will make a speech about a contemporary problem and will learn about chunking and saying numbers in pairs.
第25回:Unit 8 - Students make their own topic
Expressing opinions and talking about the future. Students make their own speech topic and we will review gestures and learn about chunking.
第26回:Preparing for the Presentation Test
Students will prepare for their speeches, by writing, making visual aids and by assessing other students in pairs and in groups.
第27回:Presentation test for a grade
Students will give and listen to all the speeches. Students will assess one other student.
第28回:Feedback and final review
Students will give written feedback on the speeches in their group.

Students should review the book after each class. Students must prepare outside class for their speeches.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
40% - First speech - including a written speech
40% - Second speech - including a written speech
20% - Participation
Lateness, absences and phone use will reduce the participation grade.
Three times late is considered one absence and lateness of thirty minutes is considered one absence.
