Outline (in English)
Students will practice listening, speaking and presentation skills. They will learn how to make better speeches by assessing other students. Students will learn more about pronunciation and gestures, as ways to improve at public speaking.

グローバル化といわれる今日において、コミュニケーション力の重要性は言うまでもありませんが、私たちはともすれば、相手の意見にただうなずくだけになってしまいます。双方向的なコミュニケーションがとれるように、リスニング力とともに、平易な英語で自分を表現する意志と能力を養います。See below.
到達目標Goal
The goal of the course is for students to improve at oral skills as well as presentation skills. Students will be graded on the content, delivery as well as their visual aids in their speeches.

Students will learn in pairs and in groups. They will give written feedback to other students in the hope that they can realize how to improve their own speeches. They will learn about pronunciation and gestures. Lectures will be kept to a minimum. Pair and group learning will be the focus. Feedback can be given in class, by the instructor as well as by other students.

第1回:Orientation and unit 1
Course overview. Students will introduce themselves and will begin practicing their speeches.
第2回:Unit 1 -Self-Introduction - First Impressions
Self-introductions. Students will make a speech and will learn about making the introduction in a speech.
第3回:Unit 2 - Hometown
Hometown, eye contact. Students will make speeches,learn about the overview and will assess each other on their eye contact.
第4回:Unit 3 - Family
Family, gestures. students will make speeches about their families and will learn about gestures.
第5回:Unit 4 - Interests, Pastimes
Interests. Students will make speeches and learn about making conclusions.
第6回:Review for a graded speech
Students will practice their speeches. They will write, make visual aids and assess other students.
第7回:First speech for a grade
Students will give their speeches, and each student will assess another student. Their will be tie for preparation.
第8回:Unit 5 - education
Education, pronunciation. Students will make speeches about education and will learn about projection and introductory phrases.
第9回:Unit 6 - Culture Shock
Culture shock, enunciation. Students will make speeches about education and will learn about enunciation and signpost expressions.
第10回:Unit 7 - Stereotypes
Stereotypes, intonation. Students will make speeches about stereotypes and will learn about intonation and sentence stress.
第11回:Unit 8 - Population
Population, phrasing. Students will make speeches about population and will learn about phrasing.
第12回:Review for the graded speech
Students will prepare for their speeches by writing, making visual aids and by assessing other students.
第13回:Second speech for a grade
Students will give and listen to all the speeches.
第14回:Unit 9, Final feedback
Students will give written feedback to other students in a peer review exercise and we will do part of unit 9.

Course overview and begin unit 1. Students will assess their ability and will introduce themselves in groups
第16回:Unit 1 - Introductions
Self-introduction, continued - Students will introduce themselves in their speeches and will learn pronuncation and voice control in pair listening practice
第17回:Unit 2 - Important Person
An important person or thing. Students will give speeches and will learn about facial and hand gestures.
第18回:Unit 3 - Places
Places - Students will make speeches about a special place and will learn about hand gestures, slides and graphs.
第19回:Unit 4 - Opinions
Opinions. Students will give their opinions about a topic for a speech, and will learn about emphasis with gestures and sentence stress.
第20回:Review for the first graded speech
Students will practice their speeches. They will write and make visual aids and will assess each other.
第21回:First speech for a grade
Students will give their speeches, and will assess one other student. There will be time to prepare at the start of class.
第22回:Unit 5 - Biography
Talking about people.
Students will give a speech about a famous person and will learn about hand gestures and appropriate gestures.
第23回:Unit 6 - Stories
Talking about past experiences. Students will tell a story in their speeches and will learn about emphasis and sentence stress.
第24回:Unit 7 - Solving Problems
Expressing opinions about various issues. Students will make a speech about a problem, and will learn about tables, graphs and chunking.
第25回:Unit 8 - Choose your own topic for a speech
Talking about experiences and the future. Students make a speech on their own topic and they will learn more about chunking and will review gestures
第26回:Final review for a graded speech
Students will practice their speeches by writing, making visual aids and by assessing other students.
第27回:Final speeches for a grade
Students will give their speeches. They will assess at least one other student.
第28回:Written feedback and textbook review
Students will give written feedback to other students about their speeches. Students will do a self-assessment for their learning.

Students should review their book every week. Students should prepare for their graded speeches outside of class.本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

40% - First speech - including a written speech
40% - Second speech - including a written speech
20% - Participation
The second speech on Zoom will take place on July 20th.
Participation includes listening and speaking English in class and giving feedback to students.
Participation points will be reduced for sleeping and lateness.
