Outline and objectives

This course offers students the opportunity to develop the understanding of economic theories and principles that enable them to discuss the issues released in the media.

Goal

To describe the microeconomic theories of individual markets. You will be able to explain the rational behavior of consumers and producers.

During the fall semester of 2021, I use the hybrid method combining both online lectures through zoom and face to face lectures in the classroom. All students are expected to prepare the group presentations, group discussion, debate, and more. I will provide the feedback of the assignments through the Hosei hoppii system. For confidentiality reasons, the result will be sent by email to very student one week after taking the quiz.

Lecture 1:What is economics?

Economic questions, economic way of thinking.

Lecture 2:The economic problem

Production possibilities frontier, using resources, economic growth, and trade.

Lecture 3:Demand and supply

Supply, supple and market equilibrium

Lecture 4:Elasticity

Price elasticity of demand, elasticity of supply

Lecture 5:Efficiency and equity

Resource allocation methods, Benefit, cost and surplus

Lecture 6:Governments Actions in Markets

A housing market with a rent ceiling, a labor market with a minimum wage, taxes

Lecture 7:Utility and demand

Consumption choices, utility-maximizing choice, marginal utility theory

Lecture 8:Possibilities, Preferences and choices

Consumption possibilities, preferences, indifference curves

Lecture 9:Organizing production

The firm and its economic problem, technological and economic efficiency, information and organization

Lecture 10:Outputs and costs

Decision time frames, short-run technology constraint, short-run cost, long-run cost

Lecture 11:Perfect competition

What is perfect competition? The firm's output decision

Lecture 12:Monopoly

Monopoly and how it arises, a single-price monopoly, price discrimination

Lecture 13:Public choices and Public Goods

Public choices, providing public goods
