Outline (in English)

This lecture deals with the historical development of maritime activities in the western part of the Indian Ocean.
It introduces how the long-distance maritime trade using dhows contributed to develop the vibrant interregional connection in the Indian Ocean World, from the Red Sea, the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf, to the west coast of the Indian Sub-Continent and to the east coast of Africa also known as Swahili coast.
Focuses are set on the historical development of this East African coastal communities.
It also deals with the various effects of arrival of European Powers, Portuguese and British and others in the Indian Ocean World.
The students will be provided the opportunity to speculate historiography further comparing their majoring subjects with the history of Indian Ocean World.
