Outline (in English)

Japan was embedded into the Western international system without any choices after Perry came from America to Japan in 1853 and the Tokugawa Shogunate entered into the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with five countries in 1858. Following the opening of the country to the world, the spirit of the domestic reform grew in Japan. Not only the Tokugawa Shogunate, but also the Imperial Court, the clans and the common people more or less faced national crisis and reacted to it. Therefore the new government was established under the Emperor and various reforms were carried out. This class focuses on The Meiji restoration, especially the domestic politics from the Perry’s arrival in 1853 to the Seinan War in 1877.
It is important for us to know what crisis Japan faced and how the people reacted to it about 150 years ago, for understanding domestic and diplomatic problems that today’s Japan have.
