Outline (in English)

This lecture follows the history of English and British literature from the 19th century to the latter half of the 20th century, with the background of such historical incidents as the rapid urbanization as a result of the Industrial Revolution, the decline of rural areas inversely proportional to it, the development of imperialism and the expansion of colonies, the spread of the national degeneration theory, the outburst of two World Wars, the formation of a welfare state, the diffusion of the British disease and the appearance of Thatcherism as the reaction to it. This lecture selects works with relevance to the national identity of England, and in doing so, explains how literature relates to the overall historical trends and how a literary work reflects the national identity of the era when it was created.
