Outline (in English)

This is an undergraduate-level lecture giving an overview of Japanese music from the ancient to early medieval period, while interpreting the depiction of music in classical literary works. In the spring semester, we center on the question "What is Japanese music?" by learning about gagaku, Buddhist music, Heike-gatari and so on. We objectively consider these genres of "Japanese music" in relation to foreign cultures and learn about their universal and unique characteristics.
