Outline (in English)

We will carefully select relatively famous passages from the writings of zhuzi baijia (the Hundred Schools of Thought) during the Pre-Qin period in China and closely read them in the original language. Zhuzi in zhuzi baijia refers to various thinkers including Confucius, Mencius, Han Fei, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Mozi, and Sunzi. Bǎijiā refers to a variety of schools including Confucianism, Daoism, Mohism, and the School of the Military. Against the backdrop of continuous wars, thinkers during the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period pursued their thoughts in various forms in order to survive the free competition between schools of thought. Through the works of zhuzi baijia, we will relive their thoughts and in so doing we seek to attain a novel perspective from which to revisit the contemporary society, while at the same time developing basic skills for reading literary Chinese.
