Outline (in English)

Selected Tang Poems is an anthology of Tang poetry (a total of 465 poems were collected) compiled by Li Panlong (1514-1570) during the Ming dynasty, and is known to be a most widely read Chinese classic during the Edo period in Japan. In this course, we will select and closely read relatively short poems from the Selected Tang Poems, and while appreciating its charm, we will complete an original translation by critically examining existing Japanese translations as well as commentaries written in literary Chinese. In addition, we will learn the social background, culture and custom during the Tang which formed the foundation for the creation of Tang poetry, as well as forms and rules of Tang poetry.
