Outline (in English)

This course is for learning the Japanese Modern Legal History, especially about the process of establishing major codes such as the Constitution, Civil Code, Commercial Code, Penal Code etc. The core part of the course is the history of Japanese legislation from the end of the Tokugawa period and the Meiji Restoration to the modern era, But the distinctive aspects of the laws and the legal systems in ancient times, medieval times and early-modern times are also discussed for the comparison with the modern and present times. In addition, we also learn about the history of the "Judicial system reform" and the "Discrimination and law" in Japan.
