Outline and objectives

The purpose of this lecture is to help participants to understand the relationship between media and social problems. For this purpose I explain three perspectives for the analysis, then focus on some social problems as case studies.

Goal

After attending this lecture, participants are expected to be able to analyze how media construct social problems by themselves.

Problems of media reports on crimes.

How media represent victims and offenders of crimes.

6:Media and Poverty (1)

Problems media cause in reporting poverty.

7:Media and Poverty (2)

Dilemma media face in reporting poverty.

8:Media and Chauvinism (1)

Current character of chauvinism and how it is related to media.

9:Media and Chauvinism (2)

I will discuss a dilemma media face in reporting chauvinism.

10:Media and Nuclear Power (1)

How mass media contributed to the introduction of nuclear power in Japan.

11:Media and Nuclear Power (2)

What "the safety myth of nuclear power" is.

12:Theory of Mass Society and Media

Theory of mass society and its social context in Japan.

13:Theory of Administered Society and Media

The theory of administered society and its social context in Japan.

Participants are expected to read articles and books I introduce during the lecture. They are required to spend 4 hours for preparation and revision for each lecture.

While I will introduce some articles and books, participants are not required to buy a textbook for this lecture.

Grading criteria

I will set a web test and ask to submit a short paper at the end of the term. The grade will be decided according to these performances (web test 20%/short paper 80%).
