Outline (in English)

In a historical context, three political perspectives can be found in the geographical spread of Russia and Central Asia. First, Russia as an empire expanded its territory rapidly; second, the countries spent most of the 20th century in the Soviet socialist system; and third, the collapse of the Soviet Union left Russia with a "loss of empire" experience. Even the resource-dependent economy and the resulting underdevelopment of the manufacturing industries are the flip side of these two legacies: territory (i.e., resources) and the Soviet socialist economy. Based on the sense of ex-"empire" that only Russia possesses, Russia changes its approach in its diplomacy towards Central Asia and towards other countries. Using the three perspectives mentioned above as a starting point, the class will be conducted in a seminar format on Russia and Central Asian countries.
