Outline (in English)

This course introduces biodiversity science to students. Biodiversity science is an emerging and highly integrative field of research dealing with all aspects of biological diversity and the relationship among the living organisms. It also deals with the history of life in the world and the cause of why various organisms and their relationships have been originated and maintained on earth. This course will incorporate ecological and evolutionary perspectives to understand the various subjects such as tree of life, taxonomy of organisms, biological interaction, animal communication, social behavior, sexual reproduction, and sexual dimorphism. We will also address approaches and techniques for the analyses of ecology, ethology, phylogeny, and evolutionary biology. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
i) Understand the sources of genetic variation, evolutionary process, and consequent biodiversity.
ii) Explain the importance of the biological interactions and signals for the social behavior.
iii) Show the methods how to draw a timeline of the history of life on earth.
iv) Explain why sexual reproduction and dimorphism are present in many organisms.
