Outline (in English)
English 1 focuses on developing academic reading skills and aims to help students gain reading strategies, identify the gist and important details, and acquire information and knowledge needed for reading comprehension. The course will provide students with an opportunity to learn academic writing skills, develop critical thinking skills, and reinforce listening skills and vocabulary through class activities.
For class preparation and review, there will be required assignments including reading and vocabulary learning outside of class. Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quizzes & Homework (30%); Presentation (15%); Final Exam (40%).

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
English 1 focuses on developing academic English proficiency and fostering reading skills. The objective of the course is to help students gain reading strategies, identify the gist and important details, and acquire information and knowledge needed for reading comprehension, through individual and group work. The course will also provide students with an opportunity to (1) learn academic writing skills and (2) develop critical thinking skills through a variety of reading materials. Furthermore, this course will also aim to reinforce listening skills and vocabulary through class activities.

By the end of the course, students will:
(a) be able to be familiar with paragraph and essay structure.
(b) be able to identify the main idea and supporting ideas in reading passages.
(c) be able to critically read and analyze reading materials.
(d) be able to articulate their ideas and opinions about different topics in writing.
(e) be able to do research and give presentations on topics of their choice.
(f) learn about plagiarism and how to avoid it.

Each class will have reading and listening activities (individual and group work) as well as a short lecture on the contents of the textbook. Homework will be given regularly. Your attendance and active participation in class is essential. Feedback on class activities and assignments will be given in class.

Students are required to do homework, do writing/listening assignments, and review and prepare for classes.
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quizzes & Homework Assignments (30%); Presentation (15%); Exams (40%).
遅刻は30分までで、それ以降は欠席扱いとなります(遅刻3回で1回の欠席になります)。4回以上欠席した場合は、単位の認定をしません。
