Outline (in English)
English 4 focuses on further developing academic English proficiency and aims to help students acquire oral and written skills required to communicate effectively in the English language in class. The course will provide students with an opportunity to share ideas and opinions through discussions, presentations, and writings and to reinforce listening skills and vocabulary learning through class activities.
For class preparation and review, there will be required assignments including writing and vocabulary learning outside of class. Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quiz (10%), Homework & Writing Assignments (20%); Presentation (15%); Final Exam (40%).

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
English 4 builds on skills and knowledge learned in English 2 and is designed to further develop academic English proficiency. The objective of the course is to help students acquire oral and written skills required to communicate effectively in the English language in class. The course will provide students with an opportunity to (1) discuss various topics in a pair/group, (2) give presentations, and (3) develop academic English writing skills. Furthermore, this course will also aim to reinforce listening skills and vocabulary learning through class activities.

By the end of the course, students will:
(a) be able to articulate their ideas and opinions about different topics, both in speech and writing.
(b) be able to discuss different topics.
(c) be able to summarize the main points of discussion.
(d) be able to give presentations on topics of their choice.
(e) be able to write a multi-paragraph essay in an organized and logical manner.
(f) learn about plagiarism and how to avoid it.

Each class will have oral and written activities (individual and group work) as well as a short lecture on the contents of the textbook. Homework will be given regularly. Your attendance and active participation in class is essential. Feedback on class activities and assignments will be given in class.

Students are required to do homework, do writing/listening assignments, and review and prepare for classes.
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Grading will be based on the following criteria: Active Participation (15%); Quiz (10%), Homework & Writing Assignments (20%); Presentation (15%); Final Exam (40%).
遅刻は30分までで、それ以降は欠席扱いとなります(遅刻3回で1回の欠席になります)。4回以上欠席した場合は、単位の認定をしません。
