Outline (in English)
English for learning about the world and for self expression.
In this unit students will develop their English ability through exploring various topics about the world. They will learn to gain new information in English, to show their understanding, and to express their own opinions in English.

In this unit students will develop their English ability through exploring various topics about the world. They will learn to gain new information in English, to show their understanding, and to express their own opinions in English.
到達目標Goal
This course aims to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) by placing special emphasis on active communication abilities. Students will learn to listen and read about various topics. They will be required to discuss these topics and to take notes and complete written tasks. They will learn to present information and their own opinions on topics through oral presentations and by writing short essays.

This course will be conducted entirely in English (but explanations will be provided in Japanese when necessary). Students will develop speaking skills by participating in a variety of activities, such as pair & group work, and by delivering a presentation. There will also be regular listening and reading exercises, as well as short writing assignments based on the topics discussed in each unit. There will also be a short final essay writing task. Through these exercises, students will become more familiar with the active use of language. They will also expand their vocabulary by engaging with different topics and specific vocabulary used in different contexts.
Comments and explanation about assignments and answers to questions from students will be given at the end of each class.

Week 1[対面/face to face]:Introductions
Introducing the syllabus. Students introduce themselves. Writing task: write a short introduction of yourself in two sentences.
Choose a “graded reader” from the list handed out in class. You will be given samples of the different levels of readers so you can decide what level is suitable for your current level of reading.
Homework: Go to Hosei University library and find the book you have chosen to read, borrow it, and bring it to next class. Start reading the book!

Reading comprehension/ Video viewing listening.
Introducing reading diary for students to fill out as they read the books they have chosen. Tell the class the book you are reading.

Instruction on note taking and writing paragraphs.
Practice presentations. Introduce a place you know well to your partner.
Homework: Prepare a Presentation on a place you know well / Reading and reading diary. Remember bring your reading diary for the final class.

Make a presentation about a place that you know to your small group.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Required time for work to be done outside of class: 1 hour per week. Required work: class preparation, vocabulary review, homework, preparation for presentations.
Set aside time to read the books that you have chosen and fill out your reading diary.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Students are expected to actively participate in class, complete various comprehension and writing tasks, do reading homework, prepare one presentation, and complete writing assignments.
Students are assessed based on the following criteria:
1. In-class reading and listening comprehension, discussions, and writing exercises (preparation for writing task). 10%
2. Writing tasks combined mark 60%
Writing tasks 1, 2, and 3 will each be worth 15% for the combined total of 45% for all writing tasks.
3. Final Presentation submitted presentations and presentation notes, and student assessments 15%
4. -Choosing a Reading and Completing a Book or books of the students choosing during the semester, reading the book, and keeping a reading diary. 15%

The instructor is always happy to receive feedback on how to make learning more enjoyable and effective.
学生が準備すべき機器他Equipment student needs to prepare
● Textbook.
● Additional resources for writing (dictionaries etc).
● Students should also prepare a notepad and pencil/pen to write notes, instructions, writing assignments, etc. when requested.
●Students are expected to have access to a computer and the Internet for homework and assessment submission. It would be beneficial for students to bring smartphones, iPads, or Laptops to the class for ease of searching for and sharing information. (Let your instructor know if this is difficult.)

Class attendance is a course requirement. Students are allowed no more than three absences in the semester (however circumstances of students will be taken into consideration and work outside of class will be assigned to students who cannot avoid being absent more than 3 times). The instructor reserves the right to modify this course syllabus whenever necessary. Students are expected to purchase and bring the textbook to each class. Students are also expected to have access to a computer and the Internet. Students are strongly advised to bring pens, notebooks, and an A4-sized folder to store printouts handed out during class.
