Outline (in English)
In the 12 units covered, students will practice speaking and writing exercises covering a range of topics expressing opinions, knowledge and experiences orally in an effective manner and practice in effectively expressing opinions, knowledge and experiences in the written form. Students will practice constructing logicallyorganized paragraphs.
Students will practice in effectively participating in and facilitating simple discussions and/or giving simple presentations and speeches.
While the focus is on speaking and writing, students will develop their skills further through listening and reading exercises.
In-class (immediate) feedback will be given as well as written feedback when necessary on writing tasks

This is an introductory course comprised of 12 units and two review classes that is designed to enable students to learn, practice and improve their practical abilities to effectively express their opinions, knowledge and experience both orally and in the written form. While this is a four skills course including reading and listening exercises, the focus is on developing speaking and writing skills.
- In speaking, students will interact in practiced and free communicative exercises designed to enable them to speak simple, effective English covering a range of topics.
- For writing, students will learn how to develop writing skills beginning with basic paragraph structure e.g., topic sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence, students will be required to learn how to write a logically organized paragraph, and then to write a short essay with multiple paragraphs.

Each of the 12 units will contain a series of in-class exercises involving speaking, reading, listening, and writing exercises, with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Speaking exercises will be conducted in pairs who are swapped frequently, and in groups of three or four students. Writing exercises will focus on writing single paragraphs in the first half of the semester, and writing a series of paragraphs in the second half of the semester.
The instructor will check the completion of student work, especially writing, in class. The instructor will give verbal feedback and make corrections to student work during each class. If the students have any difficulties, they may contact the instructor via the email address provided.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
Students are expected to review and learn any unfamiliar vocabulary or grammar covered in the class and to preview vocabulary and grammar for the upcoming lesson. In particular, students are to review their paragraph writing assignments and prepare for the mid-term and end-of-term formal writing tasks so that their grammar, syntax, and narrative structure are at the appropriate level.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Student evaluation will be based on the following criteria
1. Positive participation in speaking practice: (25%)
2. Mid-term writing test (25%)
3. End-of-term speaking test (25%)
4. End-of-term writing test (25%)
* Students missing more than three classes without adequate explanation cannot pass the course.
* Lateness (more than 5 minutes late, more than two occurances) without adequate reason will negatively impact grades.
* Chatting in Japanese, non-attention will severely impact grades
* Sleeping in class will result in a non-attendance registered.

1. Each student should bring a B5 notebook, sharp pencil, and eraser, and have an electronic dictionary ready.
