Outline (in English)

Students will read passages of multiple paragraphs at a speed necessary for different purposes (e.g. speed reading and close reading). Attention should be paid to paragraph structure, e.g., topic sentence, supporting sentence, and concluding sentence and the logical relationship between paragraphs. Students will learn how to comprehend the structure and the argument of the passage, acquire the knowledge and information they need, and grasp the writer's intention and feelings. In addition, the course will help students foster critical thinking skills, that is, skills to make an objective and multifaceted analysis of the given information, instead of accepting it unquestioningly.
The course will offer instruction of and practice in the development of effective listening skills. Students will also learn how to paraphrase what they have read, and then write in English a summary of and comments on what they have read.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
-A. rightly understand and explain the example sentences in BEFORE READING, based on the grammatical knowledge learned in GRAMMAR FOCUS and BEFORE READING.
-B. rightly understand and explain the structure and meaning of every sentence of the passage in READING, and rightly answer the related questions.
-C. rightly answer the grammar questions in ACTIVITIES.
Learning Activities Outside of Classroom
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant pages from the textbook and prepare for oral questions about them from the teacher. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Grading Criteria /Policies
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
