Outline (in English)
This class will be discussion based. In-class activities will mostly have an emphasis on discussion and listening, with reading and writing being done at home prior to the following class. I will also be doing dictoglosses which is an intensive listening which will help to facilitate your listening, vocabulary, accuracy and discussion skills. I want to make this class as interactive as possible, so it will mostly be student-centered, but teacher-facilitated.
There will be presentations, news discussions, debates, dictations, topic-based video reports and dictoglosses. These activities will be done in pair and small-groups and based on the materials provided by the instructor or student generated. Homework assignments must be done before class begins. In order to succeed in the class, please prepare well for class, do homework/research and actively participate.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This course is designed to consolidate basic communication skills in English and to further foster critical thinking skills, learning to summarize ideas and generate arguments in English independently. Activities will be balanced across the 4 skills designed to improve both the receptive and productive skills in discussing course topics, centering around contemporary and current issues.
到達目標Goal
The goal of this course is to focus on developing learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for general communication-the four foundational skills of language learning and will be a combination of both content-based as well as task-based activities, with a focus on specific information through communicative and cognitive processes. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of the formal aspects of the English language, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. At the same time, learners will engage with a variety of content topics and themes, developing their ability to discuss issues and think critically.

It will be discussion based and in-class activities will mostly have an emphasis on discussion and listening, with reading and writing being done at home prior to the following class. I will also be doing dictoglosses which is an intensive listening which will help to facilitate your listening, vocabulary, accuracy and discussion skills. I want to make this class as interactive as possible, so it is student centered.
Students are expected to be active participants in class discussion and activities. I expect that our class sessions will consist of active discussion, debate, critique, and exploration. For this format to be successful, it is critical that students read and think about the weekly readings before coming to class sessions. Follow-up discussions to each reading/research assigned will be done in the following class and students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.
This is an online class, and all weeks will be taught on ZOOM. Please see HOPPII, the university's Learning Management System for details.
