Outline (in English)
Students will watch and listen to inspiring and thought-provoking authentic TED Talks. Students will learn about
real ideas and actions that are changing the world. Students
will get used to English spoken by people from all over the
world. Students will improve their ability to handle various
types of information and to assess it critically. Students will
get better at expressing their own opinions and ideas. Students
will learn how to use the simple presentation techniques used
by TED speakers. Students will also listen to a variety of other
materials chosen by themselves. Students will study lots of
useful skills that will make listening to English easier and
more effective. Students will listen become more confident,
fluent English speakers ready for any situation.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
The goal of this course is to develop students' listening and speaking skills. Students will develop their abilities to listen to a variety of spoken materials (e.g. the news, talks, lectures and interviews). This class will help students to to prepare for academic study and to take English listening exams such as TOEIC and IELTS.
到達目標Goal
Students will study and practise a number of valuable
speaking and listening skills that can be used in both academic
and everyday situations. Students will watch and listen
to inspiring and thought-provoking TED Talks podcasts and
videos. Students will develop their ability to accurately
understand authentic listening texts and think critically about
them. They will practise many skills including; vocabulary
building, note-taking, identifying main points, summarizing,
gathering ideas, researching, outlining, organising ideas
logically. Students will use these skills to improve their
ability to express their opinions, exchange knowledge and
experiences. Students will discuss, prepare short speeches
and presentations, role plays and so on. Furthermore, by
using materials on various topics regarding politics, society,
history, and culture, students will improve their understanding
of various aspects of the world.

Active participation is necessary. Students will need to prepare
well for class, so that we can explore each topic in depth, make
good progress and enjoy speaking. As a general rule, students
are expected to use only English in class. Students will work
individually, in pairs and small groups. Feedback will be given
in the class and online as necessary. Please come to class ready
to participate actively and positively.

本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
Homework will include listening, reading, review exercises and preparation tasks for class speaking activities. Students will have homework after every class. Students will be asked to keep a listening diary of Ted Talks, news, podcasts, drama and other English listening materials that interest them.
