Outline (in English)

Course outline: This course introduces basic knowledge of the modern physics through the history of alchemy. It also helps students acquire an understanding of the hierarchy and origin of matter.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
・Explain attempts and difficulties of the alchemy in the ancient and middle ages
・Describe the hierarchy of matter from smallest to largest
・Discuss the evidences that indicates the existence of atoms
・Explain the structure of atom from the point of view of modern physics
・Explain the periodic table of elements in terms of the electron orbit

Learning activities outside of classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be decided based on mini-exam in each class meeting (50%) and term-end report (50%).
