Outline and objectives

Practice and develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Understand texts of diverse content, articulate own ideas and give short presentations.

Goal

The course aims at improving students’ overall ability to access various contents and to communicate in English. Students will learn to express themselves idiomatically in a range of situations regularly encountered in everyday and academic life. They will practice speaking and writing skills in order to become able to describe experiences and events and give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. Students will also train to structure their own thoughts and express them orally and in writing.

This is a hybrid class, and we will meet some weeks in person and some weeks on Zoom. ---
Students will work individually, and with a partner and in small groups (on Zoom, and in the classroom as far as feasible under Covid-19 prevention guidelines).
Equal importance will be given to production (spoken and written), and to listening and reading tasks. Exercises will be done both in class and as homework. There will be quizzes during and at the end of the semester. At least once during the semester, each student will give an oral presentation. Feedback on assignments and quizzes will be provided in class.

Students are expected to review grammar lessons and vocabulary, do online exercises, and complete writing assignments. --- University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

Grading criteria

Grading will be based on participation in class activities (25%), homework (25%), quizzes and tests (25%), and a presentation (25%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.

Equipment student needs to prepare

A computer or laptop which has speakers, a microphone and a video camera is needed to take part in Zoom meetings. Google Classroom will also be used. Please check Hoppii for the class code and join the class on Google Classroom.
