Outline and objectives

Learning and Using English for Global Communication:This course is designed to develop language skills necessary for students to express themselves in basic English.

Goal

Students will improve in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. How much they improve depends on how hard they work in and outside the classroom.

This course will be given entirely in English. Students will participate in a variety of activities that involves all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. These activities include role playing dialogues, pair and group discussions, and presentations based on short reading or audio-visual materials. Students are expected to come to class prepared by doing the assigned reading and homework.
Feedback on students' performance will be given in class, as well as through written assignments in class and online using Google Classroom. Students may also correspond with the instructor using e-mail.

1:Unit 5: What Do You Want to Do?

Course introduction; Review of grammar using summer vacation reports.

2:Unit 5: Future Activities

Future tense practice--questions and answers in pair and group work.

3:Unit 5 video: A Green City for the Future

Video Worksheet activities and discussion. Assign research.

4:Energy and Conservation Reports

Students report on research. Begin Unit 6: Places and Things

5:Unit 6: What's it Like?

Practice on describing family with instruction on how to write an essay.

6:Unit 6: My family--similiarties and differences

Essays due. Unit 6 reading assignment and pair/group activities. Role play textbook dialogue.

7:Writing Instruction;

8:Unit 6 Report and Wrap-up

Quiz on Units 5 & 6. Pair presentation assignment: Interview and Country Report.

11:Unit 7: Careers and Jobs

12:Unit 7 Video: Two Famous Firsts

Video worksheet and supplemental activities; final essay assingment.

13:Unit 8: Do's and Dont's

Final Essay Due; practice giving advice (have to/should)

14:Units 7-8 Review and Wrap-up.

Return final essays. Quiz on Units 7 & 8.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are expected to work/read ahead in the text by doing the readings and completing the activities assigned. Other homework assignments will be assigned in class.

Textbooks

Liz and John Soars. American Headway 2 (3rd Edition).
Other handouts and materials related to course content will be distributed in class.  Students must have a notebook/binder and/or loose sheets of paper.

References

Always bring a dictionary to class (paper or electronic dictionaries are acceptable).

Grading criteria

Class attendance & participation:   30%
Quizzes, short essays,individual and group presentations: 70%

More instruction will be provided on how to write short position statements and essays, as well as how to improve presentation skills.

In principle students are permitted up to 3 unexcused absences during the semester
Two late notices are treated as one absence (unless for a good reason--such as train delays, etc)
