Outline (in English)
In this course, students will learn how to express their opinions in English in a logical and coherent manner by learning the rudiments of academic writing and speaking. Specifically, as regards academic writing, they will learn the basic structure and mechanics of an argumentative essay, and write each component part (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) in the latter half of the course. At the end of the semester, students will give a presentation based on their argumentative essay. As for academic speaking, students will acquire more advanced skills for initiating and engaging in academic discussions through various activities. Some of these activities will focus on further enhancing the students’ listening skills. Feedback will be given on each major assignment via peer review and comments by the course instructor so that students can review the key concepts and skills covered in class. While this course is structured around a textbook, students will be given many opportunities to interact with their classmates through various activities including pair and group work, discussions, and peer review.

自分の知識、経験、意見を効果的に文章・口頭で表現する方法を学びます。具体的には、論理的な構成のエッセイを英語で書き、英語でプレゼンテーションと質疑応答するスキルを磨きます。また、英語のプレゼンテーションを理解する能力を向上させる一環として、リスニングの練習も行います。
到達目標Goal
Argumentative Essay （議論型エッセイ）が英語で書けるようになる。英語でプレゼンテーションや質疑応答をするためのスキルを磨く。英語のプレゼンテーションを聞き内容を正確に理解する能力を身につける。

テキストに沿って、Argumentative Essayを書くための方法を学びます。チャプターを終える毎に導入部とアウトラインを書いてもらい、ピア・レビューを行います。エッセイの各部分のドラフトについてもピア・レビューを行い、学期の最後には自分が書いたエッセイを元に各自英語でプレゼンテーションをしてもらいます。効果的なプレゼンテーションをするスキルを磨くために、適宜ディスカッションやリスニング練習等のアクティビティをペアやグループで行います。
ピア・レビューの他に、ライティングの課題は教員が読み、添削とコメントを施して返却します。プレゼンテーションの文章や資料についても、同様にフィードバックを行います。

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。予習範囲となる教科書のページを事前に読み、分からない単語があれば辞書等を使って意味を調べて下さい。必要に応じて、同じ範囲を読み返して復習して下さい。ライティング課題に関しては、提出する前に文法や綴り等をよくチェックすること。クラスメイトや教員からフィードバックがあった際は、コメントをよく読んで次の課題にいかすこと。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
平常点30%、ライティング課題（アウトラインを含む）40%、プレゼンテーション30%
欠席が４回以上で原則として単位修得を認めません。30分以上の遅刻は欠席扱いとなります。
