Outline and objectives

Students will develop their abilities to effectively express their opinions, knowledge and experience both orally and in written form.

Goal

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an active approach to increasing their speaking, listening and writing skills while guided and encouraged by the instructor.

Students receive feedback as follows on each assignment they submit; the teacher evaluates their work with a letter grade as well as written comments on their work and suggestions for any improvements needed. Group work will be aimed at facilitating discussions, and presentations are required. Finally, logically organized paragraph structure will be practiced leading to one short essay. The teacher reserves the right to make changes in the syllabus when necessary.

Outline due for one page essay. Essay due on week 11 In class work on essay selected from list provided by the instructor.

A. Cultural taboos: discuss different acceptable and unacceptable behavior/folkways B. Work on presentations.

第8回:Read and discuss

A. Select a short article from httpa://www.japantoday.com, highlight important points and discuss it in small groups. You must be prepared before class. B. work on presentations

第9回:Short speeches

A. Bring a small and meaningful item from home and give a short speech.
B. Work on presentations.

第10回:final group

The entire class will be used in solidifying the presentations.

Groups of 4 to 5 students will give presentations. One page essay due.

The typed paragraphs are to be completed before coming to class unless I say differently. Late work without an official documented excuse will result in a lower grade.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

Grading criteria

Group work & participation = 30% Paragraphs and essay = 35% Presentations = 35%
There are no tests in this class. Without a train delay slip students will be counted absent if more than 15 minutes late. Maximum of 3 absences. Speaking in English will result in higher participation points. required. Any form of plagiarism is unacceptable. Elaboration on this will be provided in class.
