Outline and objectives

Through a variety of stimulating topics and a number of different writing techniques, students will be challenged to improve their compositional skills to a satisfactory academic level.

Goal

To produce competent written assignments in English, students need to be able to generate ideas & organize them on paper, create the various paragraph types that are used in writing assignments and order & link paragraphs into cohesive & coherent essays. This course will provide students with a variety of stimulating writing tasks, plenty of practice to help students master each stage of the writing process & models of writing that are based on real assignments. In addition to format, grammar & punctuation review, students will be helped through the transition from paragraph structuring to basic essay composition.

Each class will cover a separate writing skill and the approach, grammatical structures & vocabulary required.
Students will be able to read samples before practicing various writing tasks.
Writing assignments will be set as homework and must be typed on A4 paper.

Essential features of an academic report layout & the thought process of writing an essay

Week 3:Writing - Pre-Writing

Topic selection, brainstorming & editting

Week 4:Writing - The Structure of a Paragraph

Topic sentence, supporting points & concluding sentence

Week 5:Writing - The Development of a Paragraph

Using details, an explanation or an example to construct a paragraph

Week 6:Writing - Descriptive Paragraphs

Describing places & people using adjectives & prepositions of position

Week 7:Writing - Process Paragraphs

Use of Transition words/Conjunctions & the imperative verb form

Week 8:Writing - Opinion Paragraphs

Opinions vs facts & causative adverbs

Week 9:Writing - The Structure of an Essay

Introduction, body paragraphs & conclusion

Week 10:Writing - Thesis Statements

Effective construction of a thesis statement

Week 11:Writing - Outlines

Correct outline format & common errors

Week 12:Writing - Problem/Solution Writing

Use of the first conditional & linking phrases

Week 13:Writing - Introductions & Conclusions

How to write effective opening & closing paragraphs

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students will be expected to spend at least 1 hour to prepare homework prior to each class on a weekly basis. In addition, regular reports will be assigned which must be printed on A4 paper. No more than 3 absences will be permitted.

Grading criteria

Grades will be decided according to the
following criteria:
30% - Participation & Punctuality
40% - Course Work
30% - Term-End Report

Feedback including corrections & a grade for each report will be given to students individually during lesson time.

In principle, no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.

Changes following student comments

Many of the class materials will be made available online for further study & guidance.
