This course is based on 2 recent films that explore the subject of growing up with a talent or gift and struggling to fulfill it in hostile circumstances. In `Billy Eliot`, students will focus on growing up in contemporary northern England with a story about a boy with a talent for ballet at the time of the miners` strike of the 1980s. In `Bend It Like Beckham`, focus will shift to an Indian girl growing up in a traditional family in a multi-cultural community with a talent for playing soccer.
Each week students will prepare relevant vocabulary and preview themes that will be raised in that lesson`s segment. After viewing two 10 minute segments of the film, students will complete pairwork comprehension questions and analyze a piece of dialogue. Students will be assigned a variety of vocabulary exercises as homework as well as completing a review of what has been seen and discussed in the previous lesson.
