Outline and objectives

This course is designed to facilitate in helping students acquire the necessary language skills needed to effectively communicate in today's English speaking world.

Goal

Through textbook exercises, discussions and presentations, students will continue to develop their abilities to effectively express their opinions, knowledge, and experience. There will be continued emphasis on listening and speaking as students gain greater fluency
and communication skills in discussing various topics.

Each class will have a minimal amount of lecture, with a strong emphasis on various task-based activities ( individual, paired and group ). There will be periodic group presentations on topics from the text as well as discussion and reaction to Interchange DVD showings.
In Week 8 and in the final class, unit test scores are returned; comments and explanations of assignments ( written reports, presentations, etc. ) are given.

1:Introduction to Fall term.

Course objectives/ student expectations.

2:Unit 5: Expanding your horizons

Living abroad; Exercises and discussion.

3:What's the custom?

Cultural differences;
traveling abroad; learning about foreign customs.

4:Crossing cultures.

Student country presentations and follow-up class reactions.

5:Unit 6: That needs fixing.

Everyday problems; problems with electronics; listening for details.

6:Consumer complaints.

Describing problems, making complaints; explaining something that needs to be done.

7:Unit 5 & 6 test

Listening for details; grammar review and reading.

8:Review of units 5 & 6 test. Introduction to Unit 7: The world we live in.

Test scores returned; comments and explanations on assignments are given.

9:Current issues.

Listening, identifying and describing environmental problems. Exercises and practice.

10:Endangered animals and places.

DVD: Endangered islands. Exercises for material comprehension and reactions.

11:Environmental solutions

Group topic presentations on various issues.

12:The past and the future. Historical events.

Talking about historical events and people; talking about the future. Exercises and practice.

13:Units 7 & 10 test.

Listening, grammar review, reading and writing ( about a famous Japanese person ).

14:Review of Fall term.

Units 7& 10 test scores
returned; comments and explanations of all assignments ( written reports, presentations, etc.) for the Fall term are given.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

There will be weekly assignments from the text ( unit exercises, writing, reading ) as well as teacher assigned. Students are expected to come to class fully prepared by having completed all assignments beforehand.
The standard preparatory study and review time for this class is one hour.

Grading criteria

The grading criteria for this course is based on:
Oral dictation/vocabulary quizzes and Unit Tests: 40%
Participation: (including attendance and the timely completion of homework assignments both written and reading: 30%
Performance in individual and group presentations: 30%

*In principal, no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.
