Outline and objectives

This course is designed to facilitate and enable students to acquire the critical language skills needed to effectively communicate in today's English speaking world. All four skills are exercised with a classroom focus on listening and speaking.

Goal

Students will develop the ability to more fluently express their opinions, knowledge and experience, both orally and in writing.
In addition, this course will also assist students in acquiring more effective listening skills so as enabling students to be more competent when interacting in the English speaking world.

Each class will have a minimal amount of lecture, with a greater emphasis on a variety of task based activities ( unit exercises, readings, discussion ) and individual and group presentations. The topics will be taken from the text as well as from supplemental materials. There will also be occasional text related DVD showings with accompanying exercises, discussion, and reaction to the video.
In Week 7 and in the final class, unit tests are reviewed as well as comments and explanations given for all assignments completed.
*Please note that this is a hybrid class, meaning that we will meet some weeks on Zoom and other times in person. Please refer to Hoppii ( Announcements ) for details.

1:Orientation.

Introduction to the class, course guidelines and student expectations.

2:Personality types and qualities.

Describing personalities; expressing likes and dislikes.

3:Relationships: turn ons and turn offs

Agreeing and disagreeing. Writing a description of a best friend.

4:Jobs and job skills.

Describing jobs; discussing the positives and negative aspects of jobs.

5:Careers of the future.

Talking about possible careers. Writing about career advantages. Student presentations.

6:Unit Test 1

Units 1&2: Listening for details, grammar review, reading comprehension.

7:Review of Unit test and introduction to Unit 3: Lend a hand

Unit test scores, comments and explanations on homework assignments ( unit exercises, reports, presentations,etc.) Making, accepting, declining requests.

8:Favors; formal and informal requests.

Listening and understanding indirect requests; requests with modals, if clauses and gerunds.

9:Borrowing and lending.

Asking classmates to borrow items; lending or refusing to lend something.

10:Unit 4: What happened?

Listening and reading about unusual news stories.

11:The media; top news stories on TV, radio and online.

Writing about your own story. Create your own news stories.

12:Narrating a story; Describing events and experiences in the past.

Group presentations.

13:Units 3&4 test

Listening for details,
grammar and reading.

14:Review of Semester 1

Units 3&4 test reviewed; comments and explanations on term assignments given.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

There will be weekly assignments from the text ( unit exercises and readings ) as well as teacher assigned tasks. Students are expected to come to class fully prepared by having completed all assignments beforehand.
The standard preparatory study and review time for this class is one hour.

Grading criteria

The grading criteria for this course is as follows:
Oral dictation/vocabulary quizzes and Unit tests: 40%
Participation: (including *attendance and the timely completion of all homework assignments, reading and writing) 30%
Individual and small group presentations: 30%

*In principle no more than 3 absences per term are allowed.
