Outline and objectives

This is a largely task-based course in which all four language skills are exercised. There will be an in-class emphasis on listening and speaking with outside work focusing on reading and writing. The overall objective is to assist in helping students acquire these critical language skills in order to be able to communicate at a minimal, but survivable level in the English speaking world.

Goal

The goal is to introduce practical and current English to students so as they can develop competence, and thus the confidence to apply it in everyday situations in the English speaking world.

The method is largely communicative based. Each class will have some lecture, but there will be a strong focus on student to student interaction/participation, namely speaking, in task-based activities in pairs and groups throughout the term. Weekly written, listening and speaking assignments taken from the textbook as well as occasional supplemental handouts will serve as the basis for the course. Feedback on all assignments will be provided during the class.
