Outline and objectives

The objective of this course is to reinforce grammar patterns students acquired in the past and to introduce new patterns for oral communication and discussion. The four productive and receptive skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be covered; however, the emphasis will be on speaking, writing, and discussion skills.

Goal

Students will reach a level of proficiency that enables one to engage in day-to-day conversation as one living in an English-speaking society. Students will exchange opinions, ideas, and information on academic topics and social issues.

This is an On-Demand class for 2021. Instructions and assignments will be given through Hoppii and Google Classroom. Students will receive feedback on their writing assignments and speaking tasks individually and/or collectively as a class via Hoppii and Classroom. Grammar mistakes from students' assignments will be provided on a regular basis. Students are to review and correct the mistakes. Check hoppii.hosei.ac.jp and Classroom for details. Homework assignments are marked complete or incomplete. More important assignments are given letter grades or points. Students' confidence will be developed through speaking and writing tasks. Student will further practice reading and listening skills using original materials. This four skills course is not a lecture course, and students are expected to participate actively and to demonstrate productive skills of the target language.

Common verb phrases, classroom language. Introduction to writing. Understanding process writing.

②:1B Who knows you better?
Simple present tense

Personality adjectives, third person and plural-s. Family. Pre-Writing: gathering ideas, choosing and narrowing a topic.

③:1C At the Moulin Rouge
Present continuous tense

Prepositions of place. The body. The structure of a paragraph: the definition and parts of of a paragraph.

④:1D The Devil's Dictionary
Defining relative clauses

Expressions for paraphrasing. The structure of a paragraph: identifying and writing topic sentences.

⑤:2A Right place, wrong time
Simple past tense, regular and irregular verbs

Vacations, -ed endings, irregular verbs. The development of a paragraph: paragraph support and development.

⑥:2B A moment in time
Past continuous tense

Prepositions of time and plac: in, on, at. The development of a paragraph: writing conluding sentences, peer editing.

⑦:2C Fifty years of pop music
Questions with and without auxillaries

Question words. Pop music. Descriptive paragraphs: organizing and writing descriptive paragraphs using adjectives and preopositions.

Verb Phrases. Descriptive paragraphs: using connecting words and phrases to write a paragraph that describes a process.

Going to, present continuous (future arrangments)

look (for, through, etc.) Opinion paragraph: distinguishing between fact and opinion, organizing and writing paragraphs expressing opinions and arguments.

Opposite verbs. Opinion paragraphs: using transition words to express causality, modal expressions to make recommendations.

Verb phrases. Problem/ Solution paragraph: writing a two-paragraph paper with linking phrases.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are to prepare for lessons before class by looking up new vocabulary and reading the reading section of each lesson. Students should review lessons by doing the grammar exercises for each lesson after class. University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

American English File Level 2 Student Book by Christina Latham-Koenig and Clive Oxenden, published by Oxford University Press 2nd edition 2013. ISBN: 978-0-19-477616-5. Handouts and worksheets for TV drama videos to enhance listening skills further will be provided by the instructor.

Grading criteria

Attendance/Attitude/Participation/Effort 30%
Homework and Writing Assignments 30% Tests, Quizzes, and Presentations 40%Attendance is taken for every class. Two unexcused absences will affect your grade. No makeup assignments or reports will be accepted for unexcused absences. Arriving twenty minutes after class has started will be counted as an absence. Being late two times counts as one absence. In principle, no more than three absences will be allowed.

Students should access Hoppii and Google Classrooms to submit assignments, tests, and to receive evaluation and feedback for their work from the instructor.Students may be asked to submit a video for presentation and short voice recordings for oral communication tasks and pronunciation exercises.

The instructor is a native speaker of American English from San Francisco, California, USA. He has taught in Japan for over 20 years and has been teaching at Hosei University since 2007.

Students who speak Japanese in this English language course, despite reminders to use English, do not stand a good chance to receive an S or an A+.
