Outline and objectives

Learning English for active communication in the international environment

Goal

This course aims to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) by placing special emphasis on active communication abilities. Students will practice and learn to express themselves effectively in speaking and writing which will help them become more active and confident communicators in the global society.

This course will be conducted entirely in English. Students will develop speaking skills by participating in a variety of activities, such as pair & group work, delivering a presentation and practicing parroting. There will also be regular listening and reading exercises, as well as short writing assignments based on the topics discussed in each unit. Through these exercises, students will become more familiar with the active use of language and gain higher word consciousness of vocabulary used in context.
Comments and explanation about assignments and answers to questions from students are given at the end of each class.
This is an online class, and all weeks will be taught on Zoom. Please see HOPPII for further instructions about how to join our Zoom sessions.

Week 1:Introduction

Explanation of course requirements, tasks and goals; Getting to know each other

Week 2:Unit 1 Getting to know you

Listening exercise: self-introduction; Speaking: my oldest friend; Grammar explanation and practice: present, past, future tenses; question forming

Week 3:Unit 1 Getting to know you

Reading: blind date; Vocabulary in context; Verbs of similar meaning; Writing: using homonyms – words with two different meanings

Week 4:Unit 2 Whatever makes you happy

Reading and listening exercise: I love what I do; Speaking: my perfect day, pair work; Grammar: present simple and present continuous; have/have got

Week 5:Unit 2 Whatever makes you happy

Reading: the happiness quiz; Vocabulary review; Listening and speaking exercise: talking about neighbours; group discussion: important things in life

Week 6:Unit 3 What’s in the news?

Listening exercise: news article; Grammar: past simple and past continuous; regular and irregular verbs; Speaking exercise: talking about the news, group work; Explaining requirements for presentation No. 1 (parroting)

Week 7:Unit 3 What’s in the news?

Listening: radio news; Reading: The flight attendant who lost his cool; Vocabulary: adverbs, time expressions; Writing exercise: rewriting a postcard using a variety of adjectives

Week 8:Presentation No. 1

Students’ presentations No. 1: parroting; Explaining requirements and introducing topics for presentation No. 2

Week 9:Unit 4 Eat, drink, and be merry!

Listening: the secret to a long life; Grammar explanation and practice: expressions of quantity, articles; Vocabulary: expressions for counting things

Week 10:Unit 4 Eat, drink, and be merry!

Listening and reading: unusual places to eat; Speaking: going shopping; Writing exercise: email to an old friend

Week 11:Unit 5 Looking forward

Listening: How does it feel to be 20-something? Grammar: future forms – going to, will and present continuous; Speaking exercise: talking about your likes and plans

Week 12:Unit 5 Looking forward

Reading with comprehension: Hope for the future; Vocabulary: phrasal verbs; Speaking: expressing doubt and certainty

Week 13:Presentation No. 2

Students’ presentations No. 2 on the chosen topic

Week 14:Course wrap up

Final test; Enjoying and learning a song

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Required time for work to be done outside of class: 1 hour per week. Required work: class preparation, vocabulary review, homework, preparation for presentations.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

Grading criteria

Students are expected to actively participate in class, prepare two presentations, complete writing assignments and pass the final test.
- Active participation in class: 20%
(In principle, no more than 3 absences will be permitted per semester for the student to receive academic credit in the course)
- Writing assignments and tests: 40%
- Presentations: 40%

● Students should also prepare a notepad and pencil/pen to write notes, instructions, writing assignments, etc. when requested.
● This class will be taught on Zoom, so students who attend the Zoom session on campus need to prepare a headset.
● We will use online applications, such as Google Classroom, Zoom and HOPPII. Please check HOPPII regularly for further instructions about how to join our Zoom sessions, Google Classroom, etc.
