Outline (in English)

The existence of tectonic landforms is one of the most significant features on the natural environment of the Japanese islands. These tectonic landforms have mainly developed related to recurrent large earthquakes. We examine spatial variation, mechanism, and history of tectonic landforms as well as the seismogenic environment in the Japanese islands, in order to understand the natural environment of the Japanese islands and to improve our social resilience.
Students should be able to do the followings by the end of the course: (1) to explain research methods in tectonic geomorphology and paleoseismology, and (2) to explain the seismogenic environment in the Japanese islands. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on short reports (30%) and a final exam or report (70%).
