Outline (in English)

The land is our stage of life, on which human society stands. It is true that the land does not seem to change, but the land has changed repeatedly and reached the present styles through various geomorphic processes such as river flood and crustal deformation in the recent geologic time. We examine the geomorphic environment in the Japanese islands, one of the tectonically active and intensely denuded regions in the world, in order to recognize how land conditions are related to human society.
Students should be able to do the followings by the end of the course: (1) to explain spatial variation, mechanism, and history of landforms, and (2) to explain issues of human society from the perspective of land conditions and land use. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on short reports (30%) and a final exam or report (70%).
