Outline (in English)

The natural environment (topography, climate, vegetation, water circulation, and so on) around human society varies in each place worldwide. Their origins are reasonable in terms of science, and they have reached the present status through various global, regional, and local changes in the history of the earth. We examine spatial variation, mechanism, and history of the present-day natural environment in the Japanese island, with in mind the relationship between the natural environment and human society (life, industry, culture, and so on).
Students should be able to do the followings by the end of the course: (1) to explain spatial variation, mechanism, and history of the natural environment, and (2) to explain influence of the natural environment on human society. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on short reports (30%) and a final exam or report (70%).
