Outline and objectives

Students will develop and improve their academic listening and speaking skills. Students will watch videos and listen to interviews and podcasts to improve their listening skills. They will improve their speaking skills through pair-work, small group discussions and other activities.

Goal

At the end of the course students should have improved their ability to listen for signal words and phrases, inferences, different opinions and examples. Students should have improved their speaking skills by asking for and giving opinions, sourcing information, checking others understand and expressing emotion.

Students will work in pairs and small groups using English in
an enjoyable and communicative way. They will take part in pair-work, small group work and prepare small projects. Students will be provided with feedback from the lecturer in the classroom. Students will be asked to submit homework and other assignments on Google Classroom.

Students watch a video about sports and technology and listen for signal words and phrases.

Week#3[対面/face to face]:Unit 5: Sports in our lives.

Students practise asking for and giving opinions.

Week#4[対面/face to face]:Unit 5 Assignment.

Students interview others about sports.

Week#5[対面/face to face]:Unit 6: How do we make decisions?

Students listen to a talk about marketing and listen for inferences.

Week#6[対面/face to face]:Unit 6: The power of a crowd.

Students watch a video about Decision Theory and talk about choices they make in everyday life.

Week#7[対面/face to face]:Unit 6 Assignment.

Students report on a class survey.

Week#8[対面/face to face]:Unit 7: Can young people change the world?

Students listen to a conversation about leadership skills and listen for different opinions.

Week#9[対面/face to face]:Unit 7: Tips from a life coach.

Students watch a video about a children's climate competition and talk about changing the world.

Week#10[対面/face to face]:Unit 7 Assignment.

Students instruct each other on how to change their habits and improve the world.

Week#11[対面/face to face]:Unit 8: When is it good to be afraid?

Students listen for examples and talk about fear.

Week#12[対面/face to face]:Unit 8: What are you afraid of?

Students participate in small group discussions and practise expressing emotions.

Week#13[対面/face to face]:Unit 8 Assignment.

Students tell personal stories about frightening or dangerous situations.

Students complete review activities.

Students should prepare for class as instructed, regularly prepare for classes and review what they have done after classes. (Total 1 hour)

Grading criteria

Homework (20%) In-class participation including participation in pair-work activities, group discussions and assignments (60%) and participation in mid-term and end of term speaking review activities (20%). Students should be able to demonstrate improvement of their listening and speaking skills as the course progresses. Homework assignments, regular attendance and active participation in class activities are required in order to pass the course.
