Outline (in English)

This year, we will examine how Japanese thinkers accepted Western ideas and what kind of politics they aimed for by reading "History of Philosophy" (originally written by Alfred Fouillée, Histoire de la Philosophie) translated by Chomin Nakae, a thinker of the Meiji era. We will examine how Japanese thinkers accepted Western ideas and what kind of politics they aimed for. The purpose of the course is to learn the outline of Western thought that modern Japan has embraced, and the traditional Japanese thought that was the premise for embracing Western thought and to deepen our awareness of philosophical and political concepts.
